Authorities shot out two tires of a fleeing car and arrested a San Antonio man who led about thirty five officers on a high-speed pursue that went through McLennan County on Monday morning, Sheriff Parnell McNamara said.
David Deberry, 28, was arrested after he led officers on a high-speed pursue from Garland, in northeast Dallas County, into McLennan County after he allegedly stole a Chryster three hundred from a Walmart parking lot in Garland early Monday morning, McNamara said.
Speeds reached more than one hundred mph on Interstate thirty five as Deberry entered McLennan County shortly after 9:45 a.m.
“They were tracking it with a cellphone that was left in the car by the proprietor and were tracking that phone when they got a ping off the phone,” McNamara said. “The car embarked getting into McLennan County, so our guys sat up on it.”
Swerved around spikes
Deberry continued to flee from officers, driving at speeds exceeding one hundred mph, McNamara said. Pursuing officers attempted to lay down spike strips four times to disable the car, but Deberry swerved around them each time, the sheriff said.
Troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety were able to get alongside the car and shot out the right front and rear tires near Hewitt.
“They were able to disable the car, and so he went a long way on two wheels,” McNamara said. “He was still (driving) over seventy mph on two wheels and, of course, the tires disintegrated.”
During the pursuit, Deberry attempted to ram the car into a trooper’s patrol vehicle. No one was injured, and officers were able to detain the driver near the McLennan-Bell County line, close to the three hundred eleven mile marker.
“Inside the car there was about $Two,000 in cash, a weapon and what we believe to be methamphetamine and marijuana,” McNamara said.
Officers arrested Deberry and took him to McLennan County Jail. He remained in custody Monday on a state jail felony charge of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, a state jail felony charge of evading arrest, a second-degree felony charge of possession of methamphetamine, a state jail felony charge of possession of cocaine and a Class B misdemeanor charge of possession of marijuana, according to jail records.
No bond information was listed Monday evening.
