Importing your car from UK to Greece

Posted: Wed Sep 30, two thousand nine Ten:09 pm

The import of your car is always topical, and on reading the forums seems to switch almost daily. So to give you the latest info I finished the process and received my Greek plates today 30th Sept.

The entire process in Greece cost me three hundred eighty six Euro, including the work of the importer I used but excluding the annual road tax.

For those interested the procedure I followed was:-

Greek Embassy in Holland Park, London introduced them with:-

– Council tax bills for the last three years

– Tens unit, water bills for the last three years

– P45 & P60’s for last three years

– UK driving licence

– V5 for the car I intend to import into Greece

Note: you must have wielded this car for a minimum of six months

The paperwork was ended and posted to me within the week.

They will require all the documents from the Greek Embassy and

– Deeds of purchase of your Greek plot of land or house

– Greek tax number document

– Greek address details

Providing you meet these criteria there is NO import duty to pay. I paid Customs sixty one Euro. including the thirty one Euro to the man who looked under the bonnet and demonstrated the Customs Officer where the VIN Plate was . (Jobs for the boys)

Then off to the ministry for vehicles with the Customs papers (technical dept) to obtain more paper.

They then issue even more paper. which you take to KTEO for the (MOT) test of compliance. Cost here fifty Euro.

The office will then issue the green vehicle “log book” which has to be taken to the tax office and the year’s road tax paid. Returning this proof of payment to the ministry office I got my Crimson Plates .

The time all this took was painful, four hours two days running in customs and each visit to other offices about an hour a lump. Fantastic service at KTEO however. Was it worth it……..yes, my car in the UK would be worth four thousand five hundred pounds. Here the same aged vehicle would cost me eight thousand Euro.

Hi Grocer and welcome to the Greece Forum.

What part of Greece have you moved to?

Good morning Piglet.

The same format took place with all the papers very first being obtained from the Greek Embassy in London. The downside of a caravan here in Greece is that you have to pay road tax of ninety two euro’s. So whilst I have it imported I have determined not to “plate it” until next January, as I would have course suffered the utter ninety two euro for just a duo of months this year and got virtually no use out of it. Next year we will use our base here in Messinias and tour. but knowing greek roads I think I’ll plan my journeys very cautiously and not rely on SatNav’s.

I was intrigued by your car import practice. I’ve been attempting to get info on this and piecing together the picture from various sources.

Is your car now permanently registered in Greece or just for six months?

If permanent, why the crimson plates you mention.

Also you don’t mention paying any tax / registration duty. That is my thickest fear. Is it indeed possible to avoid it now by sorting everything in London in advance.

Thanks for you help and advice on this. -Ben

Thought I would update you all now I am in the process of registering the caravan. Well another lesson to learn is make sure your caravan / trailer is in the name of the same person that the car is .

I produced the CHiS registration from the UK (all import papers were done last year. see previous post), to the vehicle registration office only to be told that as this was in my name and the car in my wifes it was a problem. So the way around it was to “sell” my wifey 10% of the caravan. This meant writing a receipt for the 10% and taking it to the local taxation office where it was entered on the computer against our tax codes, stamped and cost me five Euro.

CRAZY, but it was now accepted the wifes car was OK to tow the caravan and hence the papers can go through.

So taking the papers back to the registration office, we now get asked for residency certificate. ironically I have not got these get, and I did not require them for the car registration at the very same office.

So having just sorted the residency certificate out at the local police we will attempt to register the caravan tomorrow..

The final chapter (I hope), residency certificate all sorted and one hundred twelve Euro later the caravan has its own road tax and papers. Now foolish me was expecting a registration plate as well, but no. I was told to write it on a bit of board .

Now that might be OK for Greece, but when I drive through Italy etc. I think I’d better do something more professional.

Guess everyone will have different views.
