CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) – One person was killed and two others were injured Thursday morning after a car crashed into water off Interstate sixty four in Chesapeake.
Ten On Your Side confirmed with military officials that all three are Marines.
Virginia State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya tells WAVY.com the crash happened around three a.m. near the interchange of I-64 and Interstate 464.
The car was traveling west on I-64 when it overturned on its side and crashed into 4-foot deep water.
A passerby who witnessed the accident flagged down troopers, Anaya says.

Two troopers dove into the water and helped the driver and backseat passenger escape the car, and attempted to get the front seat passenger out.
Anaya says a Chesapeake Fire Department team responded to the scene and helped get the occupants out of the car.
The driver, 19-year-old Robert Stites, and backseat driver sustained major, but non life-threatening injuries. The front seat passenger died as a result of the crash, according to Anaya.
Charges are pending in the crash, and Anaya tells WAVY.com the Commonwealth’s Attorney went to the scene Wednesday morning. Police are working to notify the killed passenger’s next of kin.
