It’s about to get a bit tighter to run from the police, especially if law enforcement officials are behind the wheel of freshly revised cop cars from Ford and Dodge. Ford, for example, is adding a Trio.7-liter V-6 engine option to its Interceptor sedan and Dodge is adding all-wheel-drive capability to its Charger Pursuit car.

Let’s commence with Ford, which is now suggesting a naturally aspirated Three.7-liter V-6 to the Police Interceptor engine choices. It’s the same powerplant used in the Explorer-based Interceptor Utility, with power rated at three hundred five hp and two hundred seventy nine lb-ft of torque. The engine can only be had in an all-wheel-drive setup, so agencies located in sunnier climes should do fine with the front-drive Inceptor tooled with the Trio.5-liter V-6 (288 hp and two hundred fifty four lb-ft).

Officers who need more power can still opt for the EcoBoost Trio.5-liter turbo-six, which sends three hundred sixty five hp and three hundred fifty lb-ft to all four wheels. Ford didn’t release spectacle numbers for the Three.7-liter V-6 engine, but for comparison, we recently tested an EcoBoost-equipped Interceptor sedan and achieved a 0-60 mph time of Five.Trio seconds and a quarter-mile time of 13.9 seconds at 100.9 mph. A regular front-drive two thousand thirteen Ford Taurus with the Three.5-liter V-6 completes the 0-60 mph sprint in 6.6 seconds on to a quarter-mile time of 15.0 seconds at 95.0 mph. The EPA rates the Trio.7-liter-equipped sedan at Eighteen/25 mpg city/ highway.

Not to be outdone, today Dodge announced the addition of an all-wheel-drive option to its Charger Pursuit sedan, which was previously suggested exclusively in rear-drive form. Dodge claims its all-wheel-drive system is more advanced than the competition thanks to an active transfer case that can fully-disconnect the front axle. The all-wheel-drive Charger Pursuit model gets the same Five.7-liter V-8 used in the rear-drive car, rated at three hundred seventy hp and three hundred ninety lb-ft. The EPA has yet to rate its fuel economy, but Dodge claims it should get up to twenty five mpg on the highway.

In our tests, we ran the two thousand twelve Dodge Charger Pursuit in rear-drive form with the V-8 from 0-60 mph in Five.6 seconds on to a quarter-mile time of 14.1 seconds at 102.0 mph, however that was with a five-speed automatic. Dodge says the Charger Pursuit with the 292-hp V-6 is good for up to twenty seven mpg on the highway. The fresh all-wheel-drive Charger Pursuit V-8 should be ready for the two thousand fourteen model year.

Presently, the Chevrolet Caprice enforcement vehicle is only available with a 6.0-liter V-8 that sends three hundred fifty five hp and three hundred eighty four lb-ft to the rear wheels.
