19-year-old man dies in ‘pervert’ car accident

A 19-year-old man died early Thursday morning after he was run over by his own truck on Talley Way in Kelso.

At about 12:30 a.m. Thursday, Kelso police and Cowlitz two officials responded to a vehicle-versus-pedestrian accident at Signature Transport/Interstate Wood Products in Kelso.

Police arrived to find that victim, Anthony Deverse, of Longview had died at the scene. His truck was still running but had stopped after hitting another vehicle, said Kelso Police Captain Dar Kirk.

Deverse was reportedly working on his truck during a break from work when he lost control of his vehicle. The pickup ran over him, Kirk said.

There are no witnesses to the event, but police believe Deverse attempted to hop back into the vehicle to stop it while it was moving, Kirk said.

The vehicle was Deverse’s individual vehicle and did not belong to the company, said Jason Sanders, a lieutenant with Cowlitz Two.

“It was a weird crank accident,” Sanders said. “It was a difficult scene.”

Officials from the Cowlitz County Coroner’s Office and the Cowlitz Chaplaincy responded to the accident as well.

Deverse was a mechanic at Signature Transport, a sister company to Interstate Wood Products, which shares the same location.

He was hired four months ago, but already he was building close friendships with the 10-member mechanic team, said Dale Lemmons, possessor of Signature Transport/Interstate Wood Products.

“He was a very hard worker and a good member of our team,” Lemmons said. “He was very well liked by all the staff there.”

There are about ninety employees inbetween the two sister companies. Lemmons said the mechanic team took the day off to grieve. The company also suggested counseling services to employees.

“It’s certainly devastating. . We have fine compassion for his family and their loss,” Lemmons said. “What we’re attempting to do is just help each other out and work through this. We’ll all band together as a family.”
